Police say the man had been firing a 9mm handgun. He is due to appear in court today.

"This guy is 43-years-old. He is a very old person to fire random shots. Fortunately police officers were there," said police spokesperson Thembeka Mbhele.

The memorial service had been held for suspected hijacker, Sandile 'Chillies' Bhengu. He was shot dead by police last week.

Additional officers have been deployed to Umlazi, south of Durban this week.

Messages urging gang members to avenge his death have been circulated on social media.

KZN police say they are aware of the messages that urge criminals to hijack vehicles and attack officers.

The province's Department of Community Safety says communities must not idolise the lifestyles of criminals.

The department says fighting crime is not the responsibility of government and the police alone. It says communities must join forces with authorities to combat crime.

Police say officers will maintain a strong police presence in Umlazi until at least Sunday, when Bhengu's funeral is expected to take place.
