Mamba mating season in full swing

KwaZulu-Natal communities, especially those on the outskirts of Durban, are being advised to be aware of an increase in black mamba activity.

The snakes are currently in the mating season.

Local snake catcher,  Nick Evans says he has received dozens of black mamba callouts in recent weeks.

 Evans says the snakes do not usually bite people but could strike if they feel threatened.

He says black mambas are dangerous snakes, but it is people who normally endanger themselves.

 “If you leave a black mamba alone you are fine. They’re not going to charge you or attack you. But if you hurt a black mamba or if you corner it and try and catch it – that’s when you are going to get bitten,” he said.

 He says a bite from a mamba is very dangerous.

 “It’s got a toxic venom that shuts down the body. A black mamba bite can definitely be fatal.”

 The species’ mating season usually continues into August.
