Eskom says it has been forced to activate contingency plans, as nine of its 15 power stations across the country are battling coal shortages.

The utility says it has identified Medupi as one of the stations with a surplus supply.

From there, coal will be transported to power stations that are low on stock.

Spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe says the upcoming rainy season could also reduce the usable amount of coal it has to keep the lights on.

"According to the law we need to have a minimum of 20 days of coal stockpiled. Currently, we are sitting at less than that, which is a violation," he said.

"I have to stress that it is a concern that, once the rainy season starts, we are likely to have unfortunate incidents of load shedding again."
