Updated | By Lauren Hendricks
The M4 in Durban North became the scene of a serious crash on Friday morning.
A young woman lost her life and three people were injured in the head-on collision near the Broadway off-ramp just after 5am on Friday.
Emergency services and police were on the scene to investigate the cause of the crash.
Three people taken to hospital
Paramedics who responded to the early morning crash found two badly damaged cars blocking the roadway.
A woman in her 20s, who was a passenger in one of the cars, suffered multiple injuries and was declared dead on the scene.
ALS Paramedics spokesperson, Garrith Jamieson, says the driver sustained critical injuries.
"Once stabilised on the scene [the driver] was transported to a nearby hospital for the urgent care that he required.
“Two occupants from the second vehicle had also sustained moderate injuries and were also transported to a nearby hospital," says Jamieson.

25 injured in N3 Tugela crash involving trucks and bus
Earlier this month, at least 25 people were hospitalised after a multi-vehicle crash involving two trucks and a bus on the N3 near the Tugela Toll Plaza
Authorities issued warnings of a traffic surge as holidaymakers embarked on road trips for the Easter long weekend.
They urged motorists to drive cautiously. It is understood that the two trucks collided with a bus carrying 53 passengers in the morning.
KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya, said that the bus and a truck were travelling south when they encountered another truck that was apparently attempting a U-turn.
"The second truck was carrying dangerous goods, and it collided with the first truck, which was making a U-turn, and drove over it and returned onto the median," says Sibiya.
