LISTEN: PMB husband mourns slain pregnant wife as couple misses unborn twins’ gender reveal
Updated | By Lauren Hendricks
Aleyka Shaik, who was six months pregnant with twins, was stabbed to death in Northdale on Sunday evening.
A Pietermaritzburg man and his wife would have found out the gender of their unborn twins on Wednesday.
Instead, Tristan Arjuna's world has been shattered after his partner was murdered.
Aleyka Shaik, who was six months pregnant, was stabbed to death on Sunday evening in Northdale.
It's understood that Shaik had gone to fetch her seven-year-old daughter when she got into an argument with her ex-husband, outside his home.
Arjuna says he and Shaik, who was a nurse, had spent the day together before she left, and that she'd be back for a meal.
"We spent Sunday together at home watching a movie, and she said she was feeling for pasta, and I made her the pasta she wanted, and she said, 'Babe, don't eat without me. I'm coming back now, now," says the grieving widower.
The last thing I did was to give her a kiss and a hug.- Tristan Arjuna
Arjuna says he became concerned when his wife didn’t call him—something he says she always did.
He says he checked her vehicle tracker and rushed out to find her.
Arjuna says he found his wife stabbed in her car and held her in his arms -- now grieving not only the woman he loved, but the two lives they had not yet met.
"I can't understand how ruthless a human can be to a pregnant woman. I can't understand how you live knowing what you did to an innocent person? There's not a single bad thing that I can say anybody has against my wife."
Shaik was laid to rest on Monday.
A 39-year-old suspect was arrested and appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday on the charge of murder. The case was remanded until 7 April.
