Mbalula says government alone cannot provide enough for the country's elite athletes to compete and succeed at the highest level.

Mbalula had been speaking earlier at the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg welcoming Team SA home from Rio.

South Africa won 10 medals at the 2016 Olympics.

Mbalula says corporate South Africa has an important role to play.

Mbulala said South Africa's golden girl, Caster Semenya has the whole country's support.

He added that of all the countries competing in the Olympics, SA came out 26.

Meanwhile, American swimmer Ryan Lochte has lost all four of his major sponsors after drunkenly vandalising a Rio petrol station and lying about it.

The 12-time Olympic medallist had tried to pass the incident off as an armed robbery.

Speedo, Ralph Lauren and two other firms have pulled their support essentially wiping out Lochte's income away from the pool.
