Liquor traders back accountability after Enyobeni Tavern judgment
The National Liquor Traders says the Enyobeni Tavern judgment is a significant step towards accountability following the deaths of 21 teenagers in 2022. The organisation is urging stronger enforcement of liquor laws, greater cooperation between authorities and continued efforts to promote responsible alcohol trading.
The National Liquor Traders says it will continue working with government, regulators and communities to promote responsible liquor trading and help prevent incidents like the Enyobeni Tavern tragedy.
Yesterday, the East London Regional Court in Eastern Cape found the owners of the Enyobeni Tavern and a police officer liable for failures that contributed to the deaths of 21 teenagers in 2022.
Magistrate Mkhululi Lomalindi found tavern owners Siyakhangela and Vuyokazi Ndevu failed to comply with liquor laws.
The court also found SAPS Sergeant Thabisa Kondile Negligent for failing to act on complaints that the tavern was operating in contravention of the Liquor Trading Act.
National Liquor Traders spokesperson, Lucky Ntimane says the judgment is an important step towards accountability and serves as a reminder that every licensed liquor outlet has a responsibility to operate lawfully, responsibly and in full compliance with liquor laws.
"The National Liquor Traders therefore calls for a full respect for the judicial process as the National Prosecuting Authority considers the court's findings.
"A stronger enforcement of existing liquor legislation against those who operate outside the law. Improved cooperation between liquor boards, SAPS, municipalities, and industry stakeholders to enhance compliance.
"The organisation also calls for increased education and awareness campaigns aimed at preventing underage drinking and promoting responsible alcohol consumption, and a continued investment in responsible trading programs that equip tavern owners with the knowledge and tools to operate safely and legally."
