Former Hawks boss grilled over police takedown at Molefe’s home
Lebeya says he acted after alleged fixer and police informant Malcolm X claimed that officers at the property could be bogus.
Former Hawks head Godfrey Lebeya is facing tough questions at the Mandlanga Commission of Inquiry over his decision to send officers to the home of alleged cartel member Katiso “KT” Molefe during a police takedown operation.
Lebeya says he believed the officers at Molefe’s Sandton home were bogus after receiving information from alleged fixer and police informant Malcolm X.
Lebeya says he had no reason to doubt the informant's claim and directed senior managers to send officers to the scene to establish whether the operation was legitimate.
“I needed the Hawks to be the one that confirmed,” Lebeya said.
But the commission challenged his reasoning, adding that there was enough evidence to establish that the officers were legitimate police.
“No, General Lebeya, based on what? What is it that Malcolm X tells you that makes you believe that members of the local police station could be involved?”
