A large factory fire raged in Queensburgh, southwest of Durban, with fire crews spending Monday afternoon trying to bring the flames under control.
The eThekwini Fire Department said the building on Piet Retief Road contained plastic.
They urged local residents to stay inside and close windows and doors.
Andrea Mathios from Marshall Security said he was passing through when he noticed the black smoke.

"I'm currently at the scene, and the smoke is so intense. It’s actually starting to choke even the residents that are living in and around the ground-zero proximity of where the fire is. This thick, black smoke is absolutely choking."
Apart from fanning the flames, the strong winds were also causing chaos on the roads.
Garrith Jamieson of ALS Paramedics urged motorists are other residents to take extra care when heading home in the afternoon.
"Paramedics have attended to incidents already, where trucks have been blown over; multiple brunches and trees have fallen into roads."
