Land invasions pose threat to those building homes: Human Settlements
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
Human Settlements officials say illegal land invasions deprive people of access to basic services and threaten the lives of those who commit them.
The departments of Social Development and Human Settlements visited two communities yesterday after several residents there lost their lives in shack fires recently.
Last week, a woman and her two children were burnt to death in a blaze that left about 30 people homeless in KwaDabeka under eThekwini Municipality.
Human Settlements's Mbulelo Baloyi says they are trying to assist more than 250,000 families living in shacks in eThekwini, but land invasions make it difficult to help them.
"The government won't be able to provide these kind of services, because they are unplanned. Some of that land is meant to be used for housing development. As a result, some people jump the queue," said Baloyi.
"We are going to continue having a zero tolerance approach to land invasions."
