KZN women's organisation welcomes dialogues to address abuse

A KZN organisation against the abuse of women and children has welcomed government's plan to host 27 dialogues to engage the victims and perpetrators of abuse.

President Jacob Zuma made the announcement yesterday at the official launch of the 16 Days Campaign Against Women and Child Abuse. Zuma says these gatherings - to take place countrywide - will provide an opportunity for government to assess its own law enforcement and social support machinery in order to enhance support for women and children.
Cookie Edwards, from the KZN Women's Network, says this is a step in the right direction in addressing the growing scourge of abuse.
"This will help civil society and government who are in the sector of violence against women and children to understand what is keeping violence against women and children alive," she said.
"It sometimes gets to the extent that it is not only the women who are victims, but at times even the whole family gets killed," Edwards said.
