KZN tornado disrupts power supply

Eskom says over 15 000 households were left without power by Tuesday's tornado that battered parts of the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.

The utility says the tornado ripped through their sub-station in Hanover just outside Pietermaritzburg, that provides power to Albert Falls, Wartburg and Dalton.

Eskom spokesperson, Agnes Mlambo says teams have been working to restore the supply.


"We were able to restore an additional 5 000 customers by this morning at about 10am, and our guys are still on the ground working on the 3 600 that is still outstanding. We are hoping to restore more by this afternoon."


"These customers are fed through structures and lines that are down, so restoration will take longer than usual as we will need to ensure that the lines are safe to energise before we do."

"We are asking for patience from our customers as our teams are working tirelessly to restore the lines and we have asked for additional assistance in terms of the contractors to assist us to quicly restore the lines the lines that are one the ground," she said.  

The power utility has asked affected residents to treat any fallen lines as live while they continue assessing the damage.
