A Kwazulu-Natal school teacher has been suspended after a video of him allegedly having sex with a pupil surfaced at a school in Nquthu, in northern KZN.

It's understood the scene took place at the teacher's residence - a cottage on the premises of the rural KZN school.

KZN Education MEC Mthandeni Dlungwana held a meeting with all stakeholders at the school earlier today.

Dlungwana says more learners have since come forward - claiming to have slept with the accused teacher.

"The learner in question - in fact there are six learners that are affected - that are victims of this particular teacher, and all of them are between the ages of 14 and 16-years. That's why we have gone to the police station to open a case of statutory rape, because the learners involved are actually underage, and as such that is why we are pursuing this matter at a criminal level."

KZN police have dismissed reports that the teacher's residence had been set-alight after pupils at the school discovered that the video had gone viral.

The police's Thulani Zwane says the teacher is facing charges of statutory rape and sexual abuse.

"After the incident it is alleged that the learners became angry and they wanted to burn the cottage belonging to the teacher, but they did not burn it since he fled the scene. There's no case opened regarding that, and the police are still monitoring the situation there."

It is not yet clear who recorded the video - which is nearly-seven minutes in duration.

Investigations are underway
