KZN registered most adolescent pregnancies in 2019

KwaZulu-Natal recorded the highest number of adolescent pregnancies in 2019.
A new report released by Stats SA this week profiled health challenges faced by young children and teenagers in that year.
The report has revealed that 106 383 live births were registered nationally among girls between the ages of 10 and 19 in 2019.
KwaZulu-Natal accounted for 24.7% of the figure.
Stats SA says KZN was the only province where live births among this group was above 20%.

The Northern Cape recorded the lowest percentage at 3.7%.
The report focused on health challenges, including mortality in adolescents.
It found the leading cause of deaths in adolescents were accidents occurring at home, assaults, contact with an object and traffic accidents.
It says certain infectious diseases that include intestinal infectious diseases, tuberculosis and HIV, and respiratory system diseases led by influenza and pneumonia.
