KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thami Ntuli says government must rethink systems in response to longer life expectancies.

He was speaking yesterday [Fri] at the Senior Citizens Parliament at Inkosi Msinga Mhlaba Hall in KwaXimba, eThekwini.

The engagement follows the commemoration of International Day of Older Persons, under the theme of "The Age of Longevity: Connecting Generations and Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives."

The event provides a platform to highlight issues affecting senior citizens, recognise their contributions to society and promote their dignity and well-being.

Ageing Should Be Seen as Progress

Ntuli says the theme reminds people that ageing should not be viewed as a burden, but as a sign of human progress.

He says longer lives must be matched with systems that enable older people to live fulfilling and productive lives.

" Issues such as healthcare access, social protection, housing, and economic emancipation are central to the discussions, with emphasis placed on creating structures that uphold dignity and independence in later years for our senior citizens."

Opportunities

The Senior Citizens Parliament also provides an opportunity for older persons to raise concerns affecting their daily lives, while highlighting the important role they continue to play in families and communities.

The engagement emphasises the importance of strengthening intergenerational solidarity and building inclusive systems that support older persons.

Government and communities are being encouraged to rethink how existing systems respond to an ageing population, while ensuring that older people remain active and valued members of society.

The discussions also place focus on strengthening support for senior citizens and creating an environment where they can live with dignity, independence and access to essential services.
