The Basic Education Department says the decision was motivated by increasing COVID - 19 infections.

Jackie Moonsamy's children are in primary school She says her children are too young to fully understand the need to social distance and wear their mask at all times.

"You can keep them safe as much as you can but when they see a friend they haven't seen in a long time they want to play and interact and share things. It's natural for them to interact with each other."

Mother of a grade 8 pupil, Anidha Padayachi says she is relieved.

"If schools are delayed opening then I think that will be great for teachers and especially for the students because at that stage we would have reached our peak of the second wave. I'm all for the schools opening on the 15th of February. COVID-19 is here to stay and we need to empower our children on how to cope with it," she says.

This mother says she is not so stressed about when they go back, " I am stressed about finding a school for my child starting high school , we live on the bluff all our lives and all schools r full. It makes me so mad"

This mom raised the question on school fees, " The school is a controlled environment and it looks like the government prefer the young ones to hang round in town and malls more than to educate them! And if postponed are parents going to get discount on school fees?"
