KZN parents increasingly worried about Covid at schools
Updated | By Nondumiso Dube
Some parents say they are growing increasingly worried about the safety of their children at school aa coronavirus infections remain high.
One Durban mother says her husband saw a message on their son's school group last Wednesday, saying a teacher had tested positive for the virus.
She says the school should have been shut for the rest of that week but believes it was instead negligent and irresponsible by telling children to attend classes and write tests.
"Why are you jeopardizing the lives of children that actually shouldn't be in school when you should take the day to deep clean. We cannot trace where that educator has been; what surface she had touched, which other educator touched that surface [and] the contact they have been with children."

Another parent says schools should be shut during this third wave. She says she feels for the teachers the most.
"Teachers are exposed; teachers are forced to come to school. You know it's not right. If a teacher dies the whole system feels it. The country feels if a teacher dies, why have we so little regard for teachers?"
The Basic Education Department's spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says decisions to shut schools are made by the Health Department.
"Covid is not a school matter, it's now an education matter. Its a public health matter and on all matters regarding Covid-19, we are guided and lead by the Department of Health.
"So what you see schools do is what is provided for in the standard operation procedures, which were developed in partnership with the Department of Health and approved by them for implementation."
