eThekwini fire fighters are urging people to be extra cautious saying there's been an increase in the number of calls for help for house fires - around Durban.
A woman and her one-year-old daughter narrowly escaped the flames that consumed their Malakazi home, near Amanzimtoti yesterday.
The blaze is believed to have started in the kitchen. Malvern Ramlall's team was called to the scene.

"It would have started in the kitchen area primarily and it would have spread. There could have been some form of cooking that was done. An open flame could have possibly been the cause of the fire."
"The residents assisted the occupants to reduce the fire load by removing most of the household contents to prevent them from burning. A fire did go through the roof and it was rapidly extinguished upon arrival," he said.
