KZN Health works to reduce backlog at Fort Napier mortuary
Updated | By Jarryd Subroyen
KZN Health says they'll complete autopsies at the Fort Napier mortuary, for those who passed away due to unnatural causes, by the end of today.
This will allow their families to carry out burials this weekend.
26 bodies have accumulated at the facility after Forensic Pathology Services staff embarked on a go-slow, which disrupted operations earlier this month.
Their concerns are currently being dealt with by the National Bargaining Council. MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo says the department met with provincial police heads, who have agreed to assist with carrying out postmortems.
"We were inundated with calls - coming in from MPs and MPLs - checking and enquiring if we will be able to assist families burying their loved ones who are being kept in the government mortuaries.

"We are going to do everything possible to - assisted by the SAPS - to do all post-mortems. We will then request families to go and collect the bodies," Dhlomo said.
