KZN Health reaches deal to keep cancer machines running
Updated | By Natarah Nadesen
Provincial health officials have struck a deal with a world leader in radiation oncology systems to keep cancer treatment machines at Durban's Addington Hospital, operational.
Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo met with the president of multinational firm - Varian Medical Systems - yesterday.
The department says it was agreed that the company - which manufactured the machines - would now be responsible for keeping them on.
The machines had previously been serviced and maintained through Varian’s national agent.

But the department says the company's now established offices in South Africa. Dhlomo said in a statement late yesterday afternoon, that technicians were already working at Addington.
They've been able to fix one of the oncology machines - the second one's expected to be up and running soon.
The MEC meanwhile says they're in the process of hiring four new staff - one of them will head up the oncology clinical unit.
The department's been taking steps to address the provincial health crisis after a Human Rights Commission report found that it'd violated the rights of oncology patients.
