KZN Health MEC advocates for normalising breastfeeding
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
Health MEC, Sibongiseni Dhlomo says women should be able to breastfeed in public without fear of reproach.
As this year's World Breastfeeding Week draws to a close, the MEC has reiterated that exclusive breastfeeding for the first six monthspromotes the growth and development of babies.
He says breastfeeding is known to reduce the risks of breast and ovarian cancer later on in life and helps women return to their pre-pregnancy weight a lot quicker.
"There is merit in breastfeeding. It's not only food - it's also a protective fluid against early childhood illnesses. So we really want to advocate for this," Dhlomo said.
The MEC says people need to start talking about breastfeeding more.
