KZN farmers told to protect livestock from incoming cold

KwaZulu-Natal farmers have been urged to protect their livestock ahead of extreme conditions expected from this weekend.

The South African Weather Service says there will be icy conditions, with snow expected in eight of the nine provinces, including KZN.


The weather office says temperatures are expected to drop dramatically to 10°C as early as Sunday.

Heavy rain and strong winds are also forecast in parts of the province from Monday, particularly in the south. 


Angus Williamson, from the KZN Agricultural Union, has warned farmers to take all necessary precautions.

" When there's inclement weather coming make sure that there is extra roughage in the form of bales. 


“So, if it does snow in the high-lying areas that the cattle and sheep have got access to roughage, and bales, as well as supplementing with the necessary supplements just to ensure that they make it through the couple of days when there's cold temperatures."
