KZN Education welcomes sentencing in multi-million rand fraud case
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department has welcomed the sentence handed down to a former payrolladministrator who - along with seven others - stole millions of rands from an Eastern Cape Municipality.
44-year-old, Mduduzi Mkhize, was part of a highly-sophisticated syndicate that specialised in cybercrime.
They transferred more than R19-million from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in 2009, while working there.
But stole R1.7-million after their accounts were frozen. The group was jailed in PE on Monday.
Hawks spokesperson, Hangwani Mulaudzi says Mkhize was the leader of the pack. He says the syndicate bought computer software designed to record keystrokes and email addresses.

"He was also a mastermind in terms of the payroll system and how money moved around within government. You can see that this was a very sophisticated operation," Mulaudzi said.
Education's Kwazi Mthethwa says they want to clean the department of corruption.
"We welcome such a decision and we have always said that we want to ensure that ultimately we become champions of good governance," Mthethwa said.
