KZN Education forced to temporarily halt some teacher vaccinations

The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department says it has had to stop some teacher vaccinations scheduled for Friday as the first batch of jabs are almost finished.

"We were given 69 000 vaccinations and upon checking yesterday [Thursday], we realised that today [Friday] we shall have depleted all the vaccination. But we have been given more vaccinations," KZN Education spokesperson Muzi Mahlambi says.

Mahlambi says they were only able to accommodate educators scheduled for the first session of vaccinations in the province on Friday morning.

"We have communicated with schools that were going to come for the second session that they are not going to come because from the look of things we don't want them to come to the site, and then there's no doses.

"As from next week, we will resume the programme as scheduled so educators must not panic. By 8 July, everyone shall have been vaccinated."

Mahlambi says the province is expected to receive more vaccines over the weekend and that communication with those excluded today should take place on Sunday.

The department has confirmed that 43 800 educators have been vaccinated in the last two days in KZN, while nationally 105 000 educators have been inoculated across all provinces.

KZN is leading the inoculation drive with 32,1% of its target population vaccinated.
