KZN Education to deal decisively with teacher facing rape charges

The Education Department says it's disappointed that the principal of a school in KwaMaphumulo did not report the rape of an 11-year-old primary school pupil allegedly by a teacher.

The incident is said to have taken place on school premises last week in Nzikinziki.

The 39-year-old teacher has been arrested and appeared in the Maphumulo Magistrates’ Court.

He is currently out on bail and is expected back in court later this month.

The department's Kwazi Mthethwa says they only became aware of the incident yesterday.

''At this stage the person that we are prepared to deal with is the accused - the person who has wronged the learner. We are going to be sending social workers to offer professional help to the learner,'' he said.

This is the second incident in as many days after a matric pupil was raped on her way to write an exam near Cato Ridge.
