KZN deploys over 3,400 law enforcement officers for Easter road safety crackdown

KwaZulu-Natal will deploy over 3,400 law enforcement officers for Easter road safety, with increased roadblocks, vehicle inspections, and zero tolerance on drunk driving to reduce fatalities.
There will be over 3,400 law enforcement officers on KwaZulu-Natal's roads over the Easter long weekend.
That's according to the Department of Transport in KZN, which launched its road safety campaign in northern Durban on Tuesday.
Officials inspected buses and minibus taxis at the Umdloti RTI Centre.
Over a dozen public transport vehicles underwent vigorous roadworthiness and safety inspections.
"A multi-disciplinary roadblock executed in KwaMashu, jointly with SAPS, eThekwini Metro Police and other key stakeholders, has set the tone for the weeks ahead," says KZN Transport spokesperson Ndabezinhle Sibiya.
"Importantly, the newly appointed head of the department, Zibusiso Dlamini, is leading a team that will intensify the #NenzaniLaEzweni in our 17 provincial weighbridge sites.
"The most vehicles weighed at a single weighbridge were 40,441 vehicles at the Midway weighbridge, with an average of 3,370 vehicles weighed per month."
Four vehicles were impounded.
Sibiya says they hope to reduce road fatalities by 10% over the long weekend.
"During Easter 2025, we recorded a 38% decrease in the number of fatalities compared to the 43% we recorded in 2024."
More boots on the ground
"We have deployed more than 3,483 law enforcement officers and 105 national police officers, and they will all execute the Nenzani La Ezweni Operation with precision. They will be operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, until 3 May 2026."
Sibiya says they will also keep an eye out for scholar transport.
"In addition, we understand that there are school educational tours during the Easter holidays. In this regard, we will execute more than 91 operations focusing on scholar transport. Unroadworthy vehicles and taxis will be removed. We will target not only drivers but also the owners of these vehicles.
"Critically, for the first time, through 28 pedestrian enforcement operations, we will clamp down against drunk pedestrians who will be walking on busy roads. We will also penalise pedestrians who fail to use pedestrian bridges on various routes."
KZN DOT will focus on:
- We will have 148 multidisciplinary roadblocks.
- More than 80 roadblocks will focus on drunk driving alone.
- We will execute more than 118 speed operations in high-accident zones and other areas frequented by visitors and worshippers.
- There are more than 17 interprovincial roadblocks that will be undertaken by a roving team of law enforcement officers.
