KZN deemed 'high risk' ahead of 2019 elections

High security will be rolled out across KwaZulu-Natal for next week's general elections.

Anti-crime groups say the province has been identified as 'high risk.'

Siphiwe Dlamini, with government's Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster, says teams will be on standby on Wednesday to deal with any eventuality.

"For us to conclude if an area is high risk or not, a risk assessment [must be] conducted."

"A high risk area is a place where there is a likelihood or there have been incidents of violence to a point that people have either been killed, hurt or property has been damaged. These are concerns," explained Dlamini.

More than 51,000 police officers will be deployed to voting stations countrywide.
