KZN businesses ‘cannot keep funding Eskom’s inefficiencies’

The Pietermaritzburg Chamber of Commerce says businesses in KwaZulu Natal are in no position to keep to funding Eskom's inefficiencies.

It has been explaining why it's rejecting the utility's request for a tariff hike of 20.5% from April. The National Energy Regulator of SA is set to kick off public hearings on the power producer's application on Monday.

 

The chamber's Melanie Veness says given the situation the province finds itself in, post-covid and post-rioting, it would simply be unaffordable.

“We are battling to survive and it is a big cost for a number of organisations especially in large industries.”

 

The chamber has jointly filed legal papers to challenge Nersa's tariff model.

 

“The electricity legislation is quite clear on what should be allowed and what shouldn’t be . They shouldv’e addressed the issue of municipal tariffs years back and they failed to do that. So we feel quite confident that we have a good case,” Veness says.
