KZN ANC member due in court over unlicensed firearm

The ANC in KZN says it will wait for the outcome of court proceedings against one of its members before a decision is made on his political future.

The 45-year-old is due to appear in court this morning on charges of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.   

He was arrested in the Umzimkhulu Municipality at the weekend.

This after more police were sent to the area, thought to be a political violence hotspot.  

At least five councillors, including former ANC youth league secretary general Sindiso Magaqa, have been gunned down this year.

"Even if you want to carry a firearm it is important that the firearm must be licensed. We can't condone carrying unlicensed firearms on the basis that at times the situation is volatile in some parts of KwaZulu-Natal," said ANC provincial spokesperson Mdumiseni Ntuli.

Police say the ANC member from the Harry Gwala District was also allegedly found in possession of eight rounds of ammunition.  

SAPS spokesperson Jay Naicker says the suspect will be afforded the opportunity to state his case when he appears in the Umzimkhulu Magistrate's Court.
