KwaDukuza man sentenced to life for girlfriend's murder
Updated | By Bernadette Wicks
A KwaDukuza man who killed his girlfriend by dousing her with petrol and setting her alight, has todaybeen sentenced to life in prison.
Niresh Singh was convicted last month for Trisha Naidoo's 2016 murder.
Naidoo suffered burns to eighty per cent of her body and died two days later in hospital.
Judge Steyn said Naidoo was killed in one of the most gruesome ways imaginable and in her home - where she should have been safe.
She found Singh hadn't shown even one iota of remorse and said the court also couldn't lose sight of the fact that the couple's young son now had to be raised by his grandparents because his father had killed his mother.
The judge said when weighed up against the seriousness of his offence, Singh's personal circumstances didn't constitute substantial and compelling reasons to deviate from the minimum prescribed sentence of life.
