Knights, dames removed from Order of Australia
Updated | By Sky News
Australia has removed knights and dames from its national honours system.
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says the titles are not appropriate in the modern age.
Knights and dames were unexpectedly revived last year by then prime minister Tony Abbott, prompting accusations he was out of touch with voters.
Turnbull says Britain's Queen Elizabeth has agreed to their recommendation to remove the titles from the Order of Australia, which recognises achievement and service.
The change will not affect existing knights and dames.
Turnbull says they are out of date and not appropriate in 2015.
"Removing knights and dames from the Australian honours system is a decision the Cabinet has taken. Her majesty has agreed to amend the latest pattern which was essentially the rules of the Order of Australia and this reflects modern Australia," he said.
