Kaunda elected new eThekwini mayor

Mxolisi Kaunda is the new mayor of eThekwini.
Kaunda was elected at a full council sitting at the Durban City Hall today.
His deputy is former Finance MEC, Belinda Scott.

Kaunda has been serving as the province’s MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison.
He has vowed to turn the city around and tackle its socio-economic problems.
Kaunda occupies city hall’s top office following weeks of uncertainty around the municipality’s political leadership.

This after former Mayor Zandile Gumede was axed by the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal, along with all other party members serving on the city’s Executive Committee.
The ANC cited performance as the reason behind its decision to redeploy the office bearers.
However, Gumede withdrew her resignation as mayor last week, prompting the ANC’s senior leaders at Luthuli House to jet into Durban do resolve the issue.
Gumede was arrested earlier this year on corruption-related charges. She is due back in court next year.
Former Social Development MEC, Weziwe Thusi is the new speaker.
