ISIS kidnapping case: Detonator cellphone found in home of accused
Updated | By Bernadette Wolhuter
Officers heading the probe into the kidnapping and murder of a UK born couple have seized a modified cellphone, thought to be a detonator, and other items from the home of two suspected ISIS affiliates.
The items were taken from the home of Safydeen Del Vecchio and his wife, Fatima Patel in eShowe.
This is according to an affidavit by the officer leading investigations into the murders.
Rodney Saunders's body was found near the Tugela River Mouth.
Police are still searching for his wife Rachel. Del Vecchio and Patel began their application for bail in Verulam yesterday. He claims they’re victims of a set up.
The Hawk's warrant officer describes the devices as similar to those modified to be used as triggers to set off IEDs (improvised explosive device).

He adds that bomb plans with instructions to make a cellphone detonated IED were also found during the raid.
The officer says similar devices were used in other suicide bomber attacks including last year's Manchester Arena attack which left 22 people dead and the Brussels bombings which killed 32 civilians in 2016.
The case is due back in court next month.
