Increasing unallocated COVID-19 cases result of private lab testing
Updated | By Gcinokuhle Malinga
The provincial COVID-19 council says the mushrooming of private laboratories continues to be a worrying issue.
KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala says they've been contributing to an increasing number of unallocated COVID-19 cases.
"Some of these are testing people do not complete demographic details of patients including residential address, telephone numbers, and facility names. As a result, the province is experiencing an increase in the number of unallocated cases."
Addressing the media in Durban yesterday, Health MEC Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu said some of these private labs are not recognised by the Department of Health. And what's concerning is that they haven't been following coronavirus test procedures.

"Some of them would just get into a driveway, put a vehicle and people come in and they test them.
Now that becomes a serious problem because sometimes the service that they are offering to the community is a service that is saying is quick, we will test you, you will get your results very quickly but also when we are testing you, you don't have to get out of your car, you don't have to spend a lot of time with us," added Simelane-Zulu.
"Now it's very unfortunate because that's the process where the information is taken."
