Improving SAA, Eskom 'not for votes'

Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa says the work being done to turnaround state-owned enterprises has nothing to do with next year's local government elections.

Ramaphosa made the comments while answering questions in the National Council of Provinces yesterday.

He had been giving an update on government's efforts at entities including SAA, Eskom and the SA Post Office.

''What the government is doing is to do its job to make sure that the state-owned enterprises function effectively and efficiently. Anybody who really thinks that this is all being done to win votes has got the wrong end of the stick,'' he said.

The Deputy President also says corruption will not be tolerated.

''Those who are found with their fingers in the cookie jar must be dealt with, there must be consequences. Disciplinary measures should be embarked upon, criminal cases where evidence is in place, are instituted against those people,'' he said.
