Hlabisa joined the IFP in 1978. He takes over from Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who has led the party for 44 years.

The new party leader acknowledged that he has big shoes to fill.

"I feel humbled to follow a giant like Prince Buthelezi. I know it will not be an easy task for anyone," he said.

"Prince Buthelezi is an international icon, because no one has served through the decades like he has done."
