IFP looking to grow across SA
Updated | By Sandile Zikhali
The IFP's new leader, Velenkosini Hlabisa says the party's leadership will now work towards growing its membership beyond the borders of KwaZulu-Natal.
Hlabisa was elected as party leader at a three-day national conference in Ulundi in northern KwaZulu-Natal. The conference wrapped up this weekend.
Hlabisa joined the IFP in 1978. He takes over from Mangosuthu Buthelezi, who has led the party for 44 years.
The new party leader acknowledged that he has big shoes to fill.
"I feel humbled to follow a giant like Prince Buthelezi. I know it will not be an easy task for anyone," he said.
The national conference comes after an improved performance at the polls for Inkatha in May.
The IFP increased its number of seats in the National Assembly from 10 to 14.
It also unseated the DA as the official opposition party in KwaZulu-Natal.
"The major target is to expand the footprint of the IFP outside of KwaZulu-Natal," he said.
