IDAC head concedes unit asked Adams to file complaint against Khumalo
The admission came during questioning at the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry into the investigation that led to the 2025 arrest of Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo.
Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) head Andrea Johnson has conceded that her unit asked National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader and Member of Parliament (MP), Fadiel Adams, to file a complaint against senior Crime Intelligence officers.
Crime Intelligence boss Dumisani Khumalo was arrested in October following accusations that he illegally appointed young mechatronics engineer Dineo Mokwele to a senior technical post within the Crime Intelligence unit.
Adams, who filed several complaints against Khumalo, was himself arrested earlier this year and appeared in court in Pinetown for allegedly interfering in the investigation into the murder of former ANC secretary-general Sindiso Magaqa.
The commission has been questioning Johnson about Khumalo’s arrest and that of several of his colleagues on fraud and corruption charges.
Complaint solicitation questioned
Commissioners also wanted clarity on how the case originated and whether Khumalo was deliberately targeted by IDAC.
“As you sit here today, is that appropriate of IDAC to be soliciting complaints from members of the public on the basis of which IDAC initiates investigations?” asked evidence leader Mahlape Sello.
“No, we're not supposed to solicit,” said Johnson.
