A Durban man who launched a racist rant against President Cyril Ramaphosa calling him the k-word, has now down about-turn saying he's sorry.

"I want to retract with an apology not just to the president," Kessie Nair said.

Nair called Ramaphosa the K-word several times in the clip that's been met with outrage online. In the video, he accuses the president of fraud and high treason.

He now says he regrets what he said - saying the comments came from a place of anger over poverty and unemployment.

"There're many other ways that we could have raised [these concerns]. He made it quite clear with the Thuma Mina campaign. I apologise for it - the nation does not have to accept it," Nair said.

A case of crimen injuria has been opened against Nair. Meanwhile, the presidency's yet to respond to the clip.

"Racist remarks such as this are criminalized in South Africa. The South African police, and members of the community is well within their rights to act on these issues but the president has not taken a decision on that regard," Diko said.

Many social media users have called Nair a racist and attention seeker. Ramaphosa's spokesperson, Khusela Diko says the President has seen the video.

"This particular video to him is a stunt. It is not deserving of the airtime that we are giving it at this point in time," she said.

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has condemned the attack on Ramaphosa calling for the harshest punishment for Nair.
