I don't need more protection: Mncwango

The Democratic Alliance leader in KwaZulu-Natal says he will not employ bodyguards to protect him while police examine a handwritten letter posted to him threatening his life.

Zwakele Mncwango says the author of the letter used vulgar language warning him that he would "die before he prays" if he doesn't stop calling for a committee to investigate the killings at the Glebelands Hostel in uMlazi among other things.

He says the letter with a sender address arrived last Thursday at the party's offices in the legislature.

Mncwango says the threat will not deter him from doing his job and being vocal on critical issues.

''I don't really think just by getting that letter, I should now jump and ask for more security. I think the risk analysis should be done properly. It should be done intelligently then one can say yes, you do need protection,'' he said.

Police say a case of intimidation is being investigated by Pietermaritzburg police.
