‘I couldn’t leave her behind’ says mom charged with daughter’s murder

A Ballito woman has been slapped with an 18-year prison sentence for the murder of her four-year-old daughter.
The 47-year-old was sentenced in the KwaDukuza Regional Court yesterday.
She was arrested at her north coast home in April 2022 after the child was drowned in a bucket of water.
The mother pleaded guilty to charges of murder earlier this year.

NPA KZN spokesperson, Natasha Kara says in her plea, the woman claimed she’d been suffering from severe depression and attempted to take her own life - but could not leave her daughter behind.
Kara says she claimed that her depression stemmed from missing her first child who lived with her ex-husband and missing her current husband who was out of the country for work.
"The woman was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. The NPA welcomes the finalisation of this matter as it is our mandate to pursue justice on behalf of victims of crime."
