Housing scams on the rise in Phoenix

Housing scams are a growing problem locally, and the police are advising people to be aware and not to fall victim to these con artists.
More than 70 cases of fraud have been reported in Phoenix, north of Durban and its surrounding areas.
Police spokesperson, Nqobile Gwala says criminals publish ads in local newspapers with houses at bargain prices.

People desperate to own homes are then asked to make a deposit.
Gwala's appealed to potential buyers to verify the identity of the estate agents they communicate with, before making a purchase.
"There is currently a trend of housing scams run by criminals in Phoenix and surrounding areas."
"We are also appealing to community members to make sure that they verify the identity of estate agents. There also suspects who are attending court regarding this case."
