Hawks probe launched into Western Cape mosque attack
Updated | By Heart FM News
The Hawks are now taking over the investigation into the deadly mosque attack in Malmesbury in the Western Cape.
Two worshippers were stabbed to death in the early hours of this morning - by a knife-wielding man.
The attacker then charged at officers who were persuading him to hand himself over. But when he ignored their calls, police opened fire and he was shot and killed.
The Western Cape police's Andre Traut says the motive for the attack is not clear.
"[The suspect] was warned to surrender. He refused and in the process, he was fatally wounded. His death will now be investigated by Ipid. During the incident - two other people sustained injuries," he said.
ANC provincial secretary, Faiz Jacobs has visited the mosque.
He says it looks like a copycat killing following the attack on a Durban mosque several weeks ago.
