The University of the Witwatersrand has appointed Professor Adam Habib for a second five-year term as Vice-Chancellor.
The term, which will commence in 2018, was agreed on by the University Council following a consultation process.
"Research at Wits University has skyrocketed by approximately 43% in the last three years," says spokesperson Shirona Patel.
"Wits' academic programmes had been consolidated, graduation rates are up and innovation and teaching is at an all-time high."
Habib has in the past been criticised by student leaders for what they believe to have been an uncaring attitude to the plight of students during the fees must fall protests.
The chairperson of the Council of the University, Dr Randall Carolissen, has however praised Habib for the manner in which he dealt with the concerns raised by students.
"I believe that Professor Habib acted at all times with integrity and with the best interests of the university at heart."
Carolissen says he believes Wits has become a stronger institution since Habib's appointment.
His second term is set to expire in 2023.
