Govt maintains dual citizenship policy
Updated | By Troye Lund
Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba says government is not going to review the right of South Africans to have dual citizenship.
Gigaba’s statement which will be clarified in a briefing today follows outrage caused by an African National Congress call for it to be illegal for South Africans to have two passports.
This controversy started with the ANC expressing concern that young Jewish South Africans are going to Israel for national service.
The party called for legal changes to stop South Africans having dual citizenship.
But, Gigaba has now stressed that South African law only restricts dual citizenship for people who apply for naturalisation if their country does not allow dual citizenship.
The department, says Gigaba, is a key enabler of access to basic rights and services, including citizenship which is why no review of dual citizenship is on the cards.
