Girl drowns after being swept off Durban pier

A seven-year-old girl has drowned after being swept off Durban’s
North beach pier.
Initial reports from the scene are that the girl had been standing on the pier when she was swept into the sea by large waves.
Lifeguards launched a boat and pulled her from the water.
After returning to shore, the lifeguards and an off-duty
doctor began resuscitation efforts.

Advanced life support paramedics arrived at the scene and, together with the doctor, continued to try and revive her.
Rescue Care’s Garrith Jamieson says they tried to resuscitate her for around thirty minutes but were unsuccessful.
Tragically, she was declared dead at the scene.
Jamieson says the exact circumstances leading to the incident are still unclear at this stage.

Police were at the scene and are investigating further.
