Gigaba on Norma's arrest: 'There was no abuse of power'
Updated | By Steve Bhengu
Former cabinet minister Malusi Gigaba has denied abusing power and his influence to orchestrate the arrest of his estranged wife Norma Mngoma last year.
He resumed his testimony at the commission of inquiry into state capture on Friday morning.
Mngoma was arrested in July 2020 and accused of crimen injuria, as well as malicious damage to property involving a luxury car.
The Hawks had been issued a warrant for her arrest the day before.
There have been suggestions Mngoma was deliberately detained on a Friday so she would spend the weekend in jail.
Gigaba, who claims a hit had been put out on him, denies having had anything to do with the timing of his wife's arrest.
"I am not a police officer chairperson. I wouldn't know why they waited until the 31st (of July).
"What I dispute and refute, and reject is the conclusion that, if nothing else, the court is of the view that this only further demonstrates the abuse of power by the fourth and fifth respondents who were called by Mr Gigaba.
"There was no abuse of power. What the judge in this case curiously does is to undermine the threat to my life which had been received by me, without calling me or the police."
