This year's campaign was launched in Melmoth under the theme Hear Me Too - in line with the global #MeToo movement.

Among the objectives was to get communities to take collective responsibility to end violence against women and children.

Loyiso Saliso of the women's rights movement "The Total Shutdown" feels the campaign was not as effective as it should have been.

"We are in a national crisis right now. I think people need to understand that violence on women and children has become a national crisis. And for us to say that we dedicate 16 days or even six seconds of silence a day - makes no sense. I don't mean to offend anybody. We need to take this seriously, women fight for their lives every single day," Saliso said.

Saliso says gender-based violence needs to be confronted every day of the year.

"Do something every day and every hour to make a contribution in ending gender-based violence in this country. These campaigns, I believe, are just a hype," Saliso said.
