Gauteng, KZN lead in damning report on healthcare corruption

Corruption Watch says South Africa's public and private healthcare sectors have reached a critical state.

It’s released a report on corruption in the industry that spans seven years. 


Whistleblowers detailed the state of some 4 300 health facilities until 2019.

The report titled "X-Ray: The critical state of the health sector in South Africa", highlights widespread corruption, nationally. 


The top three trends are employment corruption, procurement corruption and the misappropriation of resources. 


KwaZulu Natal was also fingered for abuse of power, bribery and fraud. 


Corruption Watch's Melusi Ncala says the COVID-19 pandemic made matters worse.


"The leading provinces are Gauteng at 39%, KwaZulu-Natal at 16%, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape coming at 8% apiece. 


"This report comes at such a time when globally and specifically in South Africa, cases of coronavirus are spiralling and concerns are raised about the country's ability to deal with this global pandemic."
