PanSALB says G20 was selected after they had carefully considered a range of words, terms, and expressions.

The organisation noted that there were other strong contenders such as Government of National Unity, Tariffs, Femicide, and the Madlanga Commission.

The group's Ntombentle Huluhulu says researchers analysed frequency data from 1 January to December 2025.

She says they monitored keywords regularly used in reputable print, broadcast, and online media.

Huluhulu says G20 emerged as the most prominent.

“No surprises there, given that South Africa hosted the historic G20 summit, which is the first on the African continent. On social media, we have the Gen Zs’ favourite which is ‘valid’; that is slang for referring to something that is considered acceptable. It is often used to validate someone’s feelings, opinions or experiences which signifies agreement or support.

“And in a heartwarming win, the South African sign language which is the sign of the year goes to the sign for ‘I love you’, which is a beautiful reminder of the affection and connection amidst all the challenges that the country faces.”
