Former US ambassador bestowed highest honour of the city
Updated | By Nushera Soodyal
Former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Andrew Young, says the best government is a government that can serve its people best.
Speaking to Newswatch at his awards ceremony in Durban yesterday Young says that the job of government is to see that citizens have basic necessities. Young was given the eThekwini Freedom Of The City award for his work in the fight for human rights.
The only other person to receive this award is Nelson Mandela. 84 year-old Young believes that job creating and the education of citizens are vital to a happy country.
"I always say to my workers you can make more money honestly in a growing economy than you can steal in a dying economy," he said.
"So if you are doing anything dishonest you are stealing from yourself and you are running your own country and your own life to the ground," Young said.
